What are some other things I enjoy besides teaching math?

What in the world do you enjoy other than math?!?
Earth Spinning

I usually have students ask me questions like, "Mrs. Maxwell, do you like to do anything besides math?," and "Is this all you do?"

No, it isn't all I do; I really do have a life outside of the teaching arena.  Here are a few other things I enjoy when I'm not teaching or concentrating on math (as much).

Education

  • I graduated from high school in Cairo, Ga, and our mascot is (no lie) the Syrupmakers.
  • I then attended Bainbridge College for 2 years before getting married and transferring to UGA to graduate with my BS Ed. in Math Education in Dec. 1998.  While at UGA, I was a member of the marching Red Coat band during the 1996 football season.
  • Piedmont College is where I received my Master's degree in Math Education in 2001.
  • I've begun work on my Educational Doctorate  through Liberty University Online.  I started work on that degree summer of 2011.  Thus far, I have received my Educational Specialist degree through LUO (Jan. 2013) and continue to work toward my Ed.D.

Family

  • My husband is a deputy sheriff and school resource officer, and we have one daughter who is 12 years old and a son who is 8 years old.  We all enjoy spending time together as much as possible!

Talents

  • I can (still) play my French Horn, which I enjoy doing.  I play with my church orchestra on a regular basis and would some day like to try playing in a symphonic orchestra.
  • I also enjoy baking and decorating cakes (wedding, birthday, baby or wedding showers, etc).  I have been decorating cakes since I was a child, probably around 8 years old or so.  I always try and make each class a cake each semester so they can see and taste what I create.  Everything is made from scratch - no box mixes or store bought icings!

Athletics

  • I bleed Garnet and Gold.  My favorite college sports team is the Florida State Seminoles.  (Go Noles!!!)  I go to a game as often as I can, either in Tallahassee or some of their away games that are near by, like Clemson.
  • My favorite sports are football and baseball.

Favorite TV Shows

  • I love C.S.I., Without A Trace, Survivor, Big Brother, and The Amazing Race.  However, my family has recently decided that the television was taking up too much family time, so we no longer have cable - not even basic!  If we feel the need to watch, we pop in a DVD and watch as a family, but we rarely do that either.

Down Time (What's that?)

  • Like many of you, I don't have much down time.  I am usually chasing our 8 year old around or trying to keep him out of whatever he's in at the time!
  • When I do have time, however, I enjoy reading a good book.  Given a day, I can read an entire book.  I usually only have that chance during holiday breaks.
  • Playing C.S.I. is something else I love to do when I have the time.  It certainly taps into my problem solving abilities!  You must pay attention to the details...
  • I also enjoy just spending time with my family.
  • Scrapbooking is a hobby of mine.  I try to go twice a year for a weekend crop with a wonderful group of ladies.   We have lots of fun, and it's great down time!
  • The beach is my favorite place to go and relax.  I find myself totally absorbed in the awesomeness of God when I'm there.  I can sit on the beach, listen to the waves crash into the shore, and look up into the heavens and just praise my Creator!  It's the best feeling in the world!
