Helpful Hints To Help You Survive High School Math

Many students have apprehension as they enter high school about what to expect, what is expected of them, what they need, and basically how to survive each day.  Here are a few suggestions.

  1. Be prepared for class!!!  Have all paper, pencils, pens, books, notebooks, etc. handy for the class you are going to.  Keep the basics in your bookbag, like pencils, pens, and erasers.  If you go to class unprepared, it creates stress for both you and the teacher.  When you have all the necessary supplies for class, it relieves some if that tension.
  2. Manage your time wisely between classes!!!   Getting to class late because of locker breaks or restroom breaks ensures a stressful start to class.  When you are coming in the door late and then rushing to get out your materials for class, it takes your mind off the reason you are there - learning.  You are more relaxed when you arrive a couple of minutes early and have plenty of time to get ready for class.  How can you do this? (1.  Schedule planned restroom breaks and locker breaks.  For example, only go to the restroom after 1st and 3rd blocks, and go to your locker after 2nd and 4th.  This sets your body on a schedule as well.   (2.  Limit your social time between classes.  You will have the chance to visit with your friends during your break and lunch.  Use the time between classes strictly for restroom, locker, and transition to class.
  3. Never be afraid to ask!!!  The only "dumb" question is the one that is never asked.  If you can't find where you are supposed to be, ask a teacher or friend.  If you truly don't understand, ask for help.  Please always ask in a nice manner.
  4. Keep an organized notebook for each class!!!  Keep all homework, classwork, quizzes, tests, etc. in your notebook in an organized fashion.  A good organization tool for each notebook is the use of tab dividers.  Place each assignment in its corresponding tabbed section in your notebook.  This will ensure that you haven't "lost" your homework in the bottom of  your bookbag or stuck in the pages of your book.
  5. Keep your hands, feet, property, etc. to yourself!!!  When you "play hit" each other, you create tension for the ones involved.  Although you may think you're "playing" by hitting your buddies, they may not think that.  If you accidently bump into someone, say, "Excuse me," or "I'm sorry."  Those two little words can extinguish many fires!
